Retired VHS Gymnastics Head Coach Lorie Cook Recognized as 2023 Indiana Gymnastics Hall of Fame Inductee

At the IHSAA State Gymnastics meet on Saturday, March 9, Lorie Cook was celebrated as a 2023 Indiana Gymnastics Hall of Fame Inductee. Lorie dedicated an incredible 46 years as Valparaiso’s Head Gymnastics Coach, starting in 1975 and concluding with the 2021 season. Throughout her tenure, she achieved remarkable milestones, including a dual meet record of 384-47. Under her guidance, Valpo's gymnastics program flourished, securing an impressive 25 Sectional titles and 23 Regional titles. Notably, the team reached the State Finals an astonishing 27 times, clinching 13 Team State Championships and finishing as Runner-Up nine times. Lorie also nurtured 41 individual State Champions, boasting 11 All-Around State Champions among them. Recognized as an outstanding coach, Lorie received numerous accolades, including the Indiana Coaches of Girls' Sports Association Coach of the Year title 13 times. She was also honored as the 2014 National Federation of State High School Associations-Section 4 Coach of the Year and the 1998 National Federation of Interscholastic Coaches Association National Coach of the Year. Beyond coaching, Lorie contributed significantly to gymnastics as a national rated USA Gymnastics judge for over 30 years and a 15-year member of the ICGSA Gymnastics Committee. During her tenure on the committee, Lorie advocated for the expansion of teams qualifying for the IHSAA Gymnastics State Finals and introduced the inclusion of ties in the tournament series for the last advancing spot. Beyond her coaching endeavors, Lorie spent 36 years teaching Physical Education at Valparaiso Community Schools and served as the Director and Head Coach of the Valparaiso Gymnastics Club for 44 years. Even after retirement from teaching, Lorie continues to give back to the sport she loves by coaching Valparaiso’s Middle School Gymnasts. In her humble nature, Lorie acknowledges that her achievements were made possible by the collective effort of assistant coaches, dedicated athletes, and supportive administrators and club coaches who embraced the "Team First" philosophy.
